Powdered Medicines For Animals

A powder is a dry, bulk solid composed of many very fine particles that may flow freely when shaken or tilted. It also refer to those granular materials that have the finer grain sizes, and that therefore have a greater tendency to form clumps when flowing.

Powders have better chemical stability than liquids and dissolve faster than tablets or capsules because disintegration is not an issue. This translates into faster absorption for those drugs characterized by dissolution rate-limited absorption. Unpleasant tastes can be more pronounced with powders than with other dosage forms and can be a particular concern with in-feed powders, leading to variable ingestion of the desired dose. Moreover, sick animals often eat less and are therefore not amenable to treatment with in-feed powder formulations.

Powders have also been formulated with emulsifying agents to facilitate their administration as liquid drenches.

Bolus

A special tablet called a “bolus” is commonly used to provide these large dosages. A bolus is nothing more than a very large tablet, which can range from 3 to 16 g or more. Boluses are capsule shaped or cylindrical in shape.

Injections

Injectables are often the most popular method for administering parasiticides. They are easy to dose and apply and many application errors associated with the use of dips, sprays, pour-ones and drenches can be avoided.

Liquid

A liquid medication is designed to be both acceptable to the patient and palatable which can come in many forms which includes solutions, suspensions and syrups. Most commonly prescribed medications are available in a liquid format which can make taking medication easier.
